Alaska Marine Highway
Transportation
The mission of the Alaska Marine Highway System is to provide safe, reliable and efficient transportation of people, goods and vehicles among Alaska communities, Canada, and the "Lower 48".

The Alaska Marine Highway System has been operating year-round since 1963, with regularly scheduled passenger and vehicle service to 31 communities in Alaska, plus Bellingham, Washington, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. There are currently eleven vessels in the AMHS fleet.

The Alaska Marine Highway System can be thought of as being similar to a city bus transit system. It provides service in three general areas, Southeast, Southcentral and Southwest, Alaska. If you are looking for an independent method to travel coastal regions of the State, the Alaska Marine Highway deserves consideration. Let one of the travel experts at the Alaska Visitors Center show you how to incorporate the Alaska Marine Highway into your Alaska journey.
