What Glacier Hiking & Ice Climbing

Whether you're a first time visitor to a glacier or seeking an introduction to the vertical world of ice and mountaineering, we have an adventure for you!
 
  1. GLACIER TREK - Discover glacier hiking and the natural history of the Matanuska Glacier. This trip is designed for family fun and ages 6-86 (more or less). You'll use mountaineering crampons to "walk on water" as you explore the glacier with your guide. A great overview and photo opportunity.No experience necessary. Minimums: Age 6 years and shoe size Children's 13. Tour duration - 1.5 hours.
  2. THE ICE FALL TREK - Our most popular hike, featuring close-up views of crevasses, seracs and unique ice formations. With the use of crampons, you'll enjoy trekking to a high point on the glacier which overlooks the ice fall as well as getting up close. The glacier is in a constant state of change and your guide can point out various features as you navigate the intense surface. This is sure to be an unforgettable experience. No experience necessary. Minimum age 8 years. Tour duration - 3 hours.
  3. MIDNIGHT SUN EVENING TREK - Enjoy the Ice Fall Trek by the light of the midnight sun. These trips are available in June, July and August, and are great for photography enthusiasts. You will marvel at the alpenglow on the ice and enjoy the sounds of the glacier as it settles in for the evening. Midnight Sun hikes leave at 6:00 pm by prior arrangement. No experience necessary. Tour duration - 3 hours.
  4. ICE CLIMBING - Summertime at the Matanuska Glacier is an excellent time to try the vertical world of ice climbing. You can get started without any prior climbing or trekking experience. Our step by step approach ensures professional instruction in the art and technical aspects of ice climbing. You begin on moderate ice slopes and later use your skills to explore the glacier or challenge yourself on more vertical walls. Trips will accommodate different skill levels so bring the whole family. Great for group team building, too! No experience necessary. Tour duration - 6 hours.
  5. ADVANCED ICE CLIMBING & MOUNTAINEERING TRAINING - This is a custom trip geared toward your interests. You can spend your days with intensive ice climbing instruction, working on beginner to advanced skills, focus on techniques for anchor placement for climbing on your own, or learn glacier safety and crevasse rescue skills. Camp nearby and make this a multi-day learning opportunity. You can gear your trip toward exploring the glacier or climbing the many different ice walls. No experience necessary. Tour duration - 6 hours
  6. HELICOPTER GLACIER TREKING AND ICE CLIMBING - If you want to do something really special, let us fly you to one of the most remote and spectacular areas of the Matanuska Glacier. This custom, exclusive trip is sure to be the highlight of your Alaska visit! Meet your guide at the MICA Base, get rigged up with gear for the day, then get ready to hop on the helicopter when it lands in our parking lot. Your group will enjoy a short but spectacular flight to one of our favorite places up above the ice fall. This amazing area has been featured in many television shows, commercials and other advertising because it has many of the most interesting features of the glacier. Great for photo opportunities, trekking and climbing! This once in a lifetime adventure package includes round-trip helicopter flight from our base, glacier trekking, ice climbing, all technical equipment, a gourmet picnic lunch served up "On Ice" and a glass of champagne to end the day. Reservations in advance are essential. Other helicopter pick up locations such as Anchorage or Girdwood may also be arranged. This exclusive adventure is offered only on a custom basis.Tour duration - 4-6 hours
  7. GROUP INTERPRETIVE HIKE - This short walk is planned to give your large group the opportunity to stand on a glacier, learn about the natural history of the area and get some great photos. Your group will have a fun and entertaining walk down to the edge of the blue ice led by a knowledgeable Guide. It's a relatively easy walk, taking about an hour. We do not use any special equipment for this trip as we are hiking mainly on dirt and gravel. No experience necessary. Minimum age 6 years, minimum group of 10. This tour available only on a custom basis.Tour duration - 1 hour.
