Upon arrival in Kennicott, join your guide on Main Street for a half day hike on the glacier hike with sack lunch included. This moderate hike takes you to the Root Glacier where you will strap on crampons and step onto a undulating blue river of ice. Along the way your guide will explain the natural history of the area, including wildflowers, geology and the effects glaciers have had upon the landscape. Strap on your crampons and take your first steps onto the otherworldly terrain of an Alaskan glacier. Hike out across the ice as far as you can, discovering the many different features on the surface of the glacier: crevasses, moulons and perhaps even an ice cave. The color and beauty of these features will astound you. Hop the shuttle to the frontier town of McCarthy to visit the local museum and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of an Alaskan bush community. Explore the historic town built in the early part of the century. Enjoy the scenic flight back arriving back at Chitina at approx. 5:30 pm.
