The state of Alaska is divided up into five distinct regions: Southeast, Southcenteral, Southwest, Interior and Far North. Each region is uniquely different. The primary factor to consider when planning on visiting Alaska is how much time you have to spend and to plan your trip accordingly. If you have a week to spend, consider exploring parts of just one region that appeals to you. Alaska's size can be deceiving when you see it on a map. Alaska alone is one-fifth the size of the continental United States. Driving between Alaska's two major cities Fairbanks and Anchorage (364 miles / 586 kilometers) is roughly the same distance as driving between San Diego and Phoenix, Houston and New Orleans or Boston and Baltimore. Since only 25% of Alaska is accessable via road, many communities require traveling by air.

It it the traditional home of Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Indians and shared by Russians, prospectors, lumberjacks and fishermen.
