Summer
  1. Alaska is a big place. To see alot of it requires planning.
  2. Flightseeing and helicopter tours are fantastic and they should be done on one of your first days in Alaska.
  3. Summertime is the peak time for visitors. Make your plane, lodging and car rental reservations in advance to guarantee availablity.
  4. Don't forget to bring warm clothes, even when visiting in summer months. Dress in layers of clothing, that way you can be comfortable nomatter what the temperature. Rain gear can come in real handy.
  5. In the long days of summer, the sun's rays can be very strong. Use sunscreen when outdoors and bring along your sunglasses..even at night.
  6. If you get anywhere near woods or forests and water, plan on using lots of mosquito repellent.
  7. Be extra careful when outdoors. Wilderness can become dangerous very quickly.
  8. Guided tours can be worth the extra costs. Guides can make the Alaska outdoors a safer, more enjoyable experience.
  9. Most of Alaska is rural. Many products and services are available only in the larger cities such as Anchorage and Fairbanks.
  10. Less than 25% of Alaska is accessible by road and only a few of the major cities are located on the highway system. When traveling in Alaska by road, always remember to wear your seatbelt.
WINTER
  1. Day time can be short during November, December & January. Plan on only a few hours of daylight, genera1ly between 11am-2pm, during those months.
  2. Winter driving conditions exist from November till April. Avoid driving if you are not comfortable driving on ice & snow.
  3. The days may be short, the sun's rays and reflections can be very strong. Sunscreen and sunglasses can come in handy on sunny days.
  4. Dress warm using layers of clothing, that way you can be comfortable nomatter what the temperature. Gloves & winter hats are a good idea for outdoors.
  5. Outdoor activities require a heavy outer coat.
  6. Winter weather can change quickly so check the forecast before adventuring outdoors.
  7. Many facilities close in winter, so check for availability and current operating hours.
  8. Flight schedules can change quickly due to weather. Give yourself plenty of time.
  9. Cold temperature shortens battery life. Bring extra batteries for cameras and keep them warm prior to usage.
  10. Mechanical devices don't work well in extreme cold conditions.
